What is an EAP? An Employee
Assistance Program provides counseling services to your employees and their
families on a time-limited basis and/or help employees find other resources.
Employees may contact their EAP counselors directly and schedule a confidential
appointment for personal or job-related problems.
An employer may
suggest an employee see an EAP counselor due to poor job performance, alcohol
or drug problems, safety issues, or other problems which, if unattended, may
result in dismissal of the employee.
Why an
EAP? Your EAP can offer counseling for individuals, couples,
families, or groups. We can provide inservice training and workshops on
specialized topics. We can come to your site and do critical incident
debriefings. We can help with communication skills, team building, stress
management, and other areas that reduce tension and increase
productivity.
What are the benefits of an
EAP? An EAP may save you money! Research shows that an EAP can
increase productivity, reduce turnover, increase safety in the workplace,
reduce absenteeism, and reduce insurance claims. Another benefit of an EAP is
that it is free to the employee and maintains the employee's confidentiality.
Insurance claims are not confidential, often require a co-pay, and usually
require that the client be labeled with a mental illness in order for the claim
to be paid. With this information, employees are more likely to use the
services of an EAP counselor. Therefore, this is a benefit that employees learn
to appreciate.
Why worry about the employee's
personal problems? You probably already do worry about employee's
personal problems - they come to the workplace with your employees. You know it
is not your job to do marriage counseling, but that employee's divorce is
certainly impacting productivity, absenteeism, and morale. With an EAP, you can
show your concern by directing that employee to the help he or she
needs.
What help is
provided? This is not a complete list, but some of the areas of
concern that our EAP counselors deal with are:
